How our wool is made and why.
Our wool is grown, sheared and baled in SA. It is then scoured, carded, combed, spun and plyed in Victoria. Most wool available in Australia is processed overseas, even ‘Australian made wool’, does not guarantee it is processed in Australia, there are very few wool mills still operating in Australia with most Australian wool being processed in India, New Zealand and China. Our wool is unique because every step of the process is done as locally as possible.
We then hand dye the skeins with botanical plants, most of which we have foraged from our farm. Since the industrial revolution, the toxic chemicals used in synthetic dyes and dye practices are responsible for irreparable damage for human and environmental systems the world over. We aim to offer an alternative and we get to harness natures local beauty in the process.
We use zero harsh chemicals in the dyeing process which means our wool is safe to handle, wear and eventually dispose of. It also is of exceptional quality, handpicked by us as it comes off of the sheep our wool is super soft and beautiful to use.
Proudly none of our wool is super wash treated. The majority of super wash (aka easy care or machine washable wool) wool is coated in plastic resin, protecting the fibre from felting when agitated (machine washed). This uses lots of chemicals and the fibre can shed micro plastics. Not to mention the plastic inhibits the wools natural qualities which make it good for the planet and your skin. We do not produce super wash wool, our wool must be handled with care as all good wool should.
