Nomad heritage chooks
As are all Nomad Chooks, our multi-award winning Sommerlad heritage birds are raised on pasture. Nomad Heritage Chickens are bred and raised at Nomad Farms. Our breeding flocks live in and around mobile shelters where they roam free and can choose to shelter from wind, rain and sun when they desire. We have been selecting our breeding flock since 2016. The chicks spend their first few weeks inside the brooder shelters and then are moved out to their nomadic shelters at 3-4 weeks of ages depending on the conditions. Like all Nomad Chooks, our heritage birds are able to actively forage amongst fresh pasture, dust bathe, and bask in the sun. The Sommerlads are much more active and robust than the white Cobb birds we raise, and are truly built for pasture raised production. For this reason they roam far beyond their shelters inside a large area bordered by electric netting to help protect them from predation, foraging on Nomad Farm's healthy, diverse and chemical free pastures. They may choose to roost in their Nomadic Shelter at night, but are never locked into it unless we need to move the netting to a new area the following morning, something that happens every few weeks. The Nomadic Shelter is moved more often within this netted area onto fresh pasture for the birds benefit and for the land so we keep up to our main game, regenerative farming. We use techniques which not only prevent damage to landscape, but actively regenerate it. For our efforts in exploring and sharing these ideas we were awarded the 2015 SA Landcare Award for Innovation in Sustainable Farm Practices.
So what does this all result in? An exceptional meat bird, raised in a natural and healthy environment that regenerates the land. Nomad heritage chooks have been recognised for their exceptional quality by being a winner of the 2020 National Delicious Awards and state winner of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Delicious Produce Awards.
